On Monday 11 May, certain COVID-19 restrictions began to be relaxed at the local or neighborhood level in the Netherlands. These restrictions will only stay relaxed if the virus remains under control. If the circumstances so warrant, any decision to relax measures can and must be reversed.

Yesterday evening, during a national press conference, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, announced an extension of the Coronavirus measures currently in place. These measures will now be in force through 28 April 2020, an extension of an additional 3 weeks past the former date of 6 April 2020.

These are strange times for us all, but especially, perhaps, for those who are new residents in the Northern Netherlands. In this time of face-to-face social distancing, new residents may feel particularly disconnected as they may be far from their home countries and not yet rooted in the Netherlands society and culture. Even long-term residents may find the adjustment to living smaller and more contained a challenge.
