Groningen Solar Panel Park

Groningen is a progressive and sustainable city. Their latest development lies on the edge of the city, behind Hoogkerk, along the railway line to Leeuwarden: a large solar panel park.

The solar panel park is made up of 7,777 solar panels, providing energy for around 587 households. The solar panel park is the largest in the Netherlands, providing about 6% of the total electricity supply in the city.

The solar panel park development has cost around two million euros, funded by the local municipality. However, 2000 of the solar panels are to be sold to residents and businesses. The sales of the solar panels are done through the local energy cooperative Grunneger Power.

Those wishing to purchase a solar panel can purchase a ‘solar certificate’ for €350; this is the equivalent to 1 panel. Within fifteen years, participants will receive back their money in annual payments (with 3% interest).

More information can be found on the Grunneger Power website: http://www.grunnegerpower.nl/zonnepark-vierverlaten/

There are a further two solar panel parks planned in the city of Groningen. The other two are Wojderspoor and Red Rooster.
