Food Festivals in the North of the Netherlands this summer

This summer, get out and experience all the tastes of the world from the comfort of the north of the Netherlands. Across the three provinces Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe, there is are a whole host of food festivals and events happening during the summer months offering a huge variety of culinary dishes.

Here is an overview of those happening in the north this summer (June – September 2019) in date order.

15 – 16 June, De Culinaire Verleiding, Zuidlaren (Drenthe)

From food trucks and stalls, to Surinamese roti and Dutch beef stew; from organic to deliciously unhealthy, they have a wide variety to sample from.

In addition to this culinary festival there is live music, with performances by various bands and DJs and entertainment for the little ones.

16 June, Friesfestijn, Goingarijp (Friesland)

Friesfestijn is an initiative of the Seinfestijn, a small but cosy festival with a mix of fun, original products and gifts. Water sports, good food and drinks. The festival takes place at Zeilschool Garijp in Goingarijp. Entrance is free.

22 – 23 June, BARREL Food Truck Fest, Meppel (Drenthe)

Street food lovers can enjoy 20 food trucks serving tasty street food, delicious drinks and great beats in the centre of Meppel.

28 – 30 June, BARREL Food Truck Fest, Emmen (Drenthe)

A colourful and cool collection of original food trucks and mobile kitchens. Most trucks serve street food in the broadest sense of the word. Tasty smoothies, hot dogs, burgers, healthy snacks, pizzas, tortillas, churros, saté, pulled pork, but also coffee and ice cream. All kinds of snacks prepared with love.

The three-day food truck festival takes place on Raadhuisplein, opposite the entrance to the ATLAS theatre and Wildlands.

28 – 30 June, Food Truck Festival Rrrollend, Leeuwarden (Friesland)

Do you like socializing, delicious food and drinks and a large portion of entertainment? Then you are at the right place at Rrrollend Food Festivals! The nicest food festival in the Netherlands not only offers a wide variety of food, but also provides great entertainment.

5 – 7 July, De Culinaire Verleiding, Noorderplantsoen Groningen (Groningen)

From food trucks and stalls, to Surinamese roti and Dutch beef stew; from organic to deliciously unhealthy, they have a wide variety to sample from.

In addition to this culinary festival there is live music, with performances by various bands and DJs, an open-air theatre and entertainment for the little ones, such as inflatables and a craft area.

6 – 7 July, Rozenfestival Winschoten (Groningen)

The Rozenfestival takes place in the Rosarium of Winschoten. The festival consists of five parts: Flower market, food square, music stage, children’s square and culture square. Entrance is free.

18 July, Meppel met Smaak (Drenthe)

Replacing the previous Meppel Culinair event, this year day one of the Donderdag Meppeldag summer event is all about food. During the day you will find cosy food trucks and surprising dishes mixed with music acts throughout the city centre.

21 July, Foodfestival Prikmar Grou (Friesland)

Food festival PrikMar Grou is a festival where different cuisines and food trucks sell their specialties to visitors. During PrikMar, cool bands and DJs play while visitors enjoy a snack and a drink. In addition to entertainment & musical entertainment, a children’s corner is also created.

2 – 4 August, Festival der zoete verleidingen, Sleen (Drenthe)

If you like sweetness, atmosphere and fun, come to the Festival of ‘Sweet Temptation’ (Zoete Verleidingen) in Sleen. Watch baking demos and take part in sweet workshops, or if you are just a sweet lover sample mouth-watering cakes, barista coffees and all kinds of teas.

15 – 25 August, Noorderzon, Groningen (Groningen)

Noorderzon is the biggest performing arts festival in the north, and accompanying the live music is a vast array of sweet and savoury food vendors. Purchase tickets online for the acts in tents, and hurry – they go fast.

24 – 25 August, Preuvenement Assen (Groningen)

With something for everyone, both in the culinary field and in the field of music, art and culture. It is a day for all ages with workshops and a kid’s area. Entry is free and food and drinks are paid for with a coin system.

24 – 25 August, Hoogeveen Culinair, Hoogeveen (Drenthe)

The various companies from Hoogeveen show what they have to offer in the culinary field. From simple snacks to gastronomic delights, there is something for everyone. Entry is free and food and drinks are paid for with a coin system.

31 August – 1 September, MM Culinair, Emmen (Drenthe)

21 – 22 September, Smaakmakers Festival, De Wijk (Drenthe)
