Bevrijdings Festival

On May 5, the Netherlands celebrates its freedom throughout the country at the various Bevrijdings Festivals, Liberation Festivals in English. All major cities have their own plans for the day. These are the plans for the three big cities in the north of the Netherlands.

Groningen

The Bevrijdings Festival Groningen has been organized differently this year. The main event will be taking place in Stadspark and they have provided a map to help find your way around.

Admission is free and all ages are welcome at the festival, however pets are not allowed. Taking your own food to the festival grounds is permitted.  Other (soft) drinks (in glass, cardboard, can or plastic) are not allowed, with the exception of baby food and diet food. An (empty) plastic bottle (up to 0.5 l) is allowed and be filled up with water for free.

This year the festival has switched to pin-only for purchasing drinks, food etc. If you do only have cash, you can purchase a festival card for €1,50 and load the cash onto this to use throughout the festival grounds.

The festival begins at noon, (with the exception of Weide Wereld where the program stats at 9am) and continues until midnight.

Fryslan, Leeuwarden

The Bevrijdings Festival Fryslan will be taking place in the north area of the city center, just north of the Boterhoek and Groeneweg and they have provided a map to help find your way around.

Admission is free and all ages are welcome at the festival, however pets are not allowed. It is prohibited to bring your own food and drinks into the festival grounds. This year they are using a plastic coin system for purchasing food, drinks, etc inside the festival. Also to reduce waste they have a drinking cup that you purchase for 1 coin, and with each new drink you can trade in the old cup for a new one. At the end of the festival you can trade the cup back for a partial refund, with the proceeds then being used to fund future ‘circulariteit’ projects.
