Useful Apps for Expats in the Netherlands

Google Maps

For any newcomer no app is more useful than Google Maps (or other similar apps). Took a wrong turn and are completely lost? Need to do the grocery shopping, or get into town with the bus?

With the app you can navigate in real time, let it know if you are travelling by car, bus, bike or on foot and it will give you the best routes. Need to take the bus or train? It will even tell you when the next bus or train leaves.

Google Maps is available for Android and IOS devices, and via your web browser on your computer or laptop. Save mobile data by downloading your local area map at home through Wi-Fi before you head out.

9292

The main public transportation app in the Netherlands. If you need to get anywhere using public transport you can look up how, when and how much it will cost with this app. It covers bus, train, tram and metro, providing information for passengers such as departure times, platforms or bus stops. It can also plan your trip if you need transfers between buses/trains and you can look up how much it will cost. It also provides up to date information on delayed or cancelled services.

9292 is available for Android and IOS devices, and via your web browser on your computer or laptop.

Thuisbezorgd

Feeling hungry, but don’t want to go out to shop? The Thuisbezorgd app uses your phone’s GPS to make a list of local restaurants that deliver in your area. You can view their menu, select what you want to eat and order through the app, paying online with iDEAL, PayPal, Visa, MasterCard and AMEX.

Thuisbezorgd is available for Android, IOS and Windows devices, and via your web browser on your computer or laptop.

Google Translate

If you are new to the Netherlands then most likely you don’t speak much if any Dutch and you can’t always rely on other people being able to speak English. It is handy for translating single words and short phrases, but for longer pieces of text the translation won’t always be correct, but you can get a general idea of what is written.

With the app you can take a photo of a letter or page, and Google Translate will “read” the text and translate it for you.

Google Translate is available for Android and IOS devices, and via your web browser on your computer or laptop.

Dutch English Dictionary & Translator

It’s not easy to find a good, free Dutch – English dictionary app. This is my favorite to use, and it also provides examples of the word in a sentence as well as audio pronunciation.

The app is available for Android and IOS devices.

Dutch Verbs

This app is extremely useful when learning the Dutch language. Helping with spelling and grammar rules, it gives you a complete overview of a verb’s different forms and conjugations.

Dutch Verbs is available for Android devices.

De Het

Is it ‘de’ or ‘het’? When learning Dutch knowing which article to use can be really difficult, forever flickering through your dictionary to check. With this app you can quickly look it up, and it has a game option to help you practice.

The app is available for Android and IOS devices.
