Bakkeveen Car Boot / Flea Market

I really enjoy the Dutch tradition of car boot sales (called ‘vlooienmarkten’ in Dutch).  I enjoy the leisurely stroll, looking at all the interesting items and, most of all, getting some great bargains!

One market I look forward to each year are the monthly car boots in the small village Bakkeveen in Friesland.

The flea market in Bakkeveen is one of the largest open-air markets in the north of the Netherlands with over 500 stands and thousands of visitors coming to each market (in good weather).  The market is known for its friendliness and size.

The market is spread out up a street in the village leading to a sports facility where it covers the car park, and then also two large fields (weather permitting) to accommodate very busy market days and parking.

Most of the stands are from individuals selling 2nd hand goods: tools, toys, clothes, books, home décor, etc., plus some stands offering antique and curiosa items.  I always come away with a couple of bags of bargains, especially when buying clothes and toys for my daughter.

This year is the 29th season that the market has been running. The market is organised by volunteers and the funds raised from stand holder fees help support the local sports facilities and community projects.

The market is ‘open’ from 8am until 1pm.  Entry is free. Parking is available on site in one of the fields for a cost of €1 per car.

Upcoming Dates: 6 May, 20 May, 3 June, 17 June, 1 July, 22 July, 5 August, 19 August, 2 September, 7 October and 4 November.
